Although this chapter may seem to be a digression from the strict line of our sub­ject, since it speaks chiefly of foreign national music, the student of history will find a kin­ship among the songs of Freedom in every clime, and some of the tunes cited will be found to have exerted a direct influence upon American music. It has been well said — " Happy are those nations which have no history," for history is too often only the record of the strife, injustice, and oppression of mankind.
